This is the 11th SIGSPATIAL Cup competition (GISCUP 2022), co-located with the 2022 ACM SIGSPATIAL conference. The goal of this annual contest, hosted by SIGSPATTIAL, is to encourage innovation in a fun and active way. The winners will be announced at the ACM SIGSPATIAL conference in November 2022. Contest participants will submit original computer programs, and the submitted code will be evaluated by the contest organizers on common data sets.
The 2022 contest will focus on analyzing large data sets of LiDAR point clouds. Processing and classifying large-scale LiDAR point clouds is an essential step for creating an accurate Digital Surface Model (DSM). An accurate DSM is a critical component in many geospatial computations such as design, deployment, and maintenance of infrastructures like power networks, wireless communication networks, and other facilities. An accurate DSM is utilized in urban planning, hydrological planning, sewer planning, ML-based agricalture, and similar planning tasks. In such cases, it is often essential to know where there are buildings, trees, roads, water towers, electricity poles, and other geospatial objects. For these objects, their footprints (i.e., their bounding polygon) should be accurately computed.
To simplify the task, our focus in this contest will be on detection of buildings. Thus, the key topics that are being addressed in this year’s cup are the following:
Analyzing LiDAR point clouds
Geospatial Segmentation and classification
Computation of building footprints.
Prizes will be awarded to the top three teams. In addition to the prizes, the top three teams will be invited to submit a four-page paper for a contest paper session to be held at the 2022 ACM SIGSPATIAL conference. These papers will be reviewed by the contest organizers and when accepted, will be presented at the conference. We expect that each team among the top three teams will have their paper in the conference proceedings and a ten-minute presentation in the contest session at the SIGSPATIAL conference. At least one team member of each winning team must register for the 2022 ACM SIGSPATIAL conference, for presenting the paper.

Travel Grants
Thank you to W. Randolph Franklin for a generous donation to support conference travel grants for SIGSPATIAL Cup winners. Professor Franklin is a long-time SIGSPATIAL supporter and researcher, and he has been a successful SIGSPATIAL Cup (GISCUP) winner in the past. The application process for the travel grants will be announced soon.
